What are the benefits of learning sign language with my child?

Signing with Infants: Many people think that sign language is only useful for those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. However, many parents have recently become aware of the fact that "typical" babies are also able to use sign language - and they can use it to communicate long before they develop the ability to speak. An infant or child who knows even just a handful of signs has the advantage of being able to express their needs, wants, and observations much earlier.

Signing with Toddlers and Young Children: Many parents observe that by learning to communicate earlier, the “terrible twos” are not so terrible—children can use a sign instead of throwing a tantrum to express their needs. Also, American Sign Language is a real, living language used by millions of Deaf Americans.
